Detailed project case study
Platform Economics & Supplier Value Programme
A commercial and technical review of the estate that removed waste while protecting capability, resilience and scalability.
Reviewed the technology estate, consolidated suppliers, removed unused licensing and renegotiated contracts to reduce annual IT expenditure from £1.2m to £480k.
Context
Technology spend had accumulated across overlapping platforms, unused licences, fragmented suppliers and contracts whose value was no longer clear. The task was to reduce cost without hollowing out capability.
My mandate
Own the commercial and technical review of the estate, reduce waste and improve supplier accountability without hollowing out operational capability.
Scope
- Enterprise technology estate
- £1.2m starting annual spend
- Suppliers, licensing, hosting and internal platforms
- Finance, operations and executive stakeholders
Selected technologies
Key decisions
- Map utilisation, ownership and renewal exposure before making commercial changes.
- Consolidate or replace tools only where the operating model could retain capability and support ownership.
- Treat supplier negotiation and architecture rationalisation as one decision process.
What the team delivered
- Mapped platform ownership, utilisation, renewal exposure and operational dependencies.
- Consolidated suppliers, rationalised platforms and removed unused licensing.
- Renegotiated strategic contracts and replaced restrictive tools where internal capability offered better value.
Trade-offs
Cost had to come out of the estate without transferring hidden risk, reducing resilience or creating unsupported internal services.
Outcome
Reduced annual IT expenditure from £1.2m to £480k through vendor consolidation, platform rationalisation and process automation.
Based on internal cost records; evidence available in interview.Supplier and contract savings through commercial negotiation.
Evidence available in interview.- Reduced annual IT expenditure from £1.2m to £480k.
- Delivered more than £200k per year in supplier and contract savings.
- Improved ownership, scalability and long-term platform value while reducing waste.
Evidence
Internal cost records and supplier agreements measured the reduction from £1.2m to £480k. The £200k supplier figure is a component of the wider programme and is not presented as an additional homepage saving.
What this demonstrates
Budget ownership, commercial judgement, supplier governance and platform economics grounded in operational reality.
